For those who prefer to burn off those extra calories (before or after all that hearty eating that is the norm at this time of the year), Gijón has a full programme of sports events starting on Christmas Eve.
The starting gun for one of the city’s major fun runs of the year will go off at 11am on 24th December at Las Mestas sports complex.
This 5-km run through the city’s streets is a must to work up an appetite for that family supper Spaniards hold on Christmas Eve. On Christmas Day, the more warm-blooded (and less-bloated from the night before) will have the chance to swim across the inner harbour of the Marina.
If you didn’t manage to get your runner’s kit ready for the 24th, though, you can always take part in the city’s most popular fun run, the 6-km San Silvestre, held on New Year’s Eve. The first starting gun will go off at 4pm at El Molinón football stadium.
Register to run at championshipnorte.com.
For indoor sports enthusiasts, the “Cider” Badminton Championship will be held at 6:30pm on 7th and 8th January at La Tejerona Sports Pavilion. Registration costs €19 and there will be two categories to compete in. You must be federated to participate, though. Happy Shuttlecocks!
As for spectator sports, there will be two major events for bike fans in the city on 26th December. In the morning, the Town of Gijón Trailbike Race will take place between 10am and 2pm in Los Pericones Park.
Gijón will also host the City of Gijón Burn Freestyle Championship at the Adolfo Suárez Sports Centre starting at 6:30pm. Admission costs €15 for the under-12s and €25 for adults. Tickets can be bought through liberbank.com or at Motos Gijón.
So now you have no excuse to become a couch potato over the hols… get out there and have a Healthy Happy Christmas!
