Gijón is a great spot for anyone wishing to take up this “cool” sport. Whether you fancy trying traditional surfing or the stand up paddle variety, Tablas Surf School offers beginner courses all year round (1 or 2 days, for a maximum group size of 6 people) that will enable you to discover if you have in fact got what it takes to ride the waves!
Ideal for groups of friends, families or individuals, this aerobic sport, which is great for tonifying your muscles, really gets your heart beating at the same time as improving your sense of balance and stamina.
On offshoot of surfing, Stand Up Paddle (SUP) or Standup Paddle Boarding (Hoe he’e nalu in the Hawaiian language) is becoming increasingly popular, mainly due to its ease for beginners and the immediate physical benefits it offers. It basically comprises standing up on a 3-metre-long surfboard and rowing with a paddle. The two most common ways of practising this sport are paddling along the coastline or across bays, or surfing the waves with the aid of the paddle.
All you need to bring along for either variety, besides the urge to surf, are your swimming costume, a towel and flip-flops; Tablas supply the rest.
Suitable for kids over 7 years old (who already know how to swim, of course).
