If you come to Gijón, there is a visit that you cannot miss: Laboral, City of Culture. A cultural centre that attracts thousands of visitors each year. This complex, boasting the tallest stone tower in Spain, the world’s largest elliptical church, a theatre similar in size to the Parthenon and a central square as large as the Piazza San Marco in Venice, has a different kind of museum that will surprise you.
LABoral Art and Creation Centre, situated just outside the main set of buildings, where the workshops used to be. A museum where you can experience art, new technologies and industrial creation. In an area of 14,000 sq m, occupying the former Universidad Laboral workshops, the ultimate aim of the programme offered by artists and creators for all kinds of public is to generate and share knowledge. Workshops, talks, exhibitions, courses… an endless list of activities 365 days of the year.
If you plan to visit soon, you can discover the “Return Voyage” project open until 15th February in the LABoral sound lab. The aim of this sound installation by the Mapa Sonoru Group, comprising a voyage through the sounds generated around transport in Asturias, is to provide an approach to transport from the point of view of sound, an aspect that affects humans more than we might imagine.
All the activities taking place here can be found on centre’s website: http://www.laboralcentrodearte.org/en?set_language=en.
