Gijon becomes more attractive when we add the magical atmosphere the city breathes from the first week of December on as a lead-up to the Christmas festivities: special Christmas lights, street markets, concerts, musicals, Mercaplana, street ambience… all paired with the finest Asturian cuisine. Discover how Gijón shines at Christmas!
Children and the not-so-young alike will have a great time seeing the Christmas lights on the city tour bus’ special tour; they can have a go at skating on the natural ice rink that will be installed in El Bibio Bullring, a monument boasting over 125 years of history; they will be amazed by some of the street artists and storytellers; or they can get rid of loads of energy at the Children and Youth Salon, Mercaplana. And to top it all, Thumbelina’s story takes to the stage at the Jovellanos Theatre on 27th December in the form of a family musical in a freely adapted version by Gloria Muñoz.
But not only the youngest members of the family enjoy Christmas in Gijón. Their elders should also reserve a spot or two in their diaries. Fito y los Fitipaldis will play in Gijón on 5th December, Les Choristes –Saint Mark’s Children’s Choir will perform on 11th and Maldita Nerea on 28th. The Gospel Festival, which will be held throughout the month, will feature groups like the Soweto Gospel Choir, the Georgia Mass Choir and the Mississippi Mass Choir. And to bring in 2015, a well known choir will offer a New Year’s Concert at the Jovellanos Theatre.
These are just some of the excuses to allow you to enjoy this Asturian city, its lively streets filled with art galleries, modern cafes and original shops and its street markets, like the Christmas Market on Begoña Promenade, the Ecological and Crafts Market in the town square and the market held in the Railway Museum. Not to forget places to visit like the Aquarium and the Atlantic Botanic Gardens, where a manger will be installed featuring life-size figures.
All accompanied by the city’s renowned cuisine. The Gijón Gourmet menu enables you to savour the proposals of Gijón’s best chefs at a reasonable price, including those distinguished with a Michelin star; the Sweet-toothed Gijón vouchers allow you to discover the specialties of the most innovative as well as the most traditional pastry shops; while the Cider Trail vouchers provide access to more traditional cuisine paired with this quintessential Asturian beverage.
