Possibly the most luxurious way of visiting Gijón is on the Transcantábrico Gran Lujo train linking San Sebastian to the east with Santiago de Compostela to the west. Dubbed “the most luxurious train in the world” by its promoters, the train has only 14 double suites, all painstakingly decorated to ensure a special, grand luxe atmosphere.
The original 1923 Pullman lounge cars are veritable railway jewels from an age gone by where those privileged to be guests can enjoy their meals, a drink from the all-day bar, read the press, play board games or simply enjoy the spectacular views from the panoramic lounge. There is also a tea room and even a pub, offering live music and parties.
On its route through Asturias, which takes in Picos de Europa National Park and the Lakes and Sanctuary of Covadonga, passengers will have the opportunity to visit Gijón on a luxury coach while the Transcantábrico remains in Candás, just along the coast.
It may not be the most economical way of visiting Gijón by far, but it will certainly be the most luxurious. The Transcantábrico Gran Lujo train journey is a must for lovers of those by-gone days of the railways epitomized by other trains such as the Orient Express and the Tran Siberian Railway… at least for those who can afford the €4,250/person for 7 Days Full Board in a Double Suite, including excursions, security service and guide throughout the trip!
All aboard… Next stop Gijón!!!
