The opening ceremony, on 9th August, starts with a speech in Plaza Mayor, followed by music, folk groups and the Danza de Palos (Stick Dance) which has been recovered to coincide with the bicentenary of the death of the writer Jovellanos. The writer had already referred to this dance in 1790. The party then continues on Playa de Poniente at 23:00 h with QuanticysuComboBarbaro.
On 10th August the prize-giving ceremony for the “Noega” bagpipes Trophy will be held, forming part of the 9th Bagpipes Competition of Xixón, in Plaza Mayor, followed by a performance by Juan Perro on Playa de Poniente; on the 11th, the group ChocQuibTown will be performing in Plaza Mayor and Rosendo on Playa de Poniente; on the 12th, Adanowsky will surprise us with a musical and visual performance in Plaza Mayor and Fangoria will end the day on the Beach. On the morning of 13th August, GigiaSaxBandand the BandadeMúsicadeGijón “VilladeJovellanos“ will be performing in Plaza Mayor followed by a performance by SlyJohnson that night, and OrquestaLosSatélites will be playing on the Beach.
On 14th August, don’t miss the Great Firework Display! And, to make sure no-one goes hungry, Hotel Tryp Rey Pelayo will be offering a special supper. At midnight, the firework display that everyone has been waiting for will be held, on Cerro Santa Catalina, Gijón. The groups Los Solomones and Granujasatodoritmo will provide the music and make us move to the beat on Poniente Beach. And OrquestaSuavecito will be waiting to perform for us in Paseo de Begoña.
On 15th August, the Festive Week ends with the traditional Danza Prima y el Restallón in Paseo del Muro de San Lorenzo at 1400 h; this is a special moment where we will all hold hands with our relatives and friends, to remember local people and visitors and bid farewell to the festivities until next year. The official closing ceremony will take place in Plaza Mayor at 20:00h with the Xeringonza and Danza de Santa Ana.
